has just pulled the wraps off its most exciting performance model in years – the rally-inspired Mokka GSE. This isn’t just another trim level with some red badges; it’s a proper 280bhp electric hot crossover that’s been caught testing in full prototype guise. And if the concept is anything to go by, it’s about to inject some much-needed excitement into the electric crossover segment.

Design That Screams ‘WRC for the Road’

The GSE treatment transforms the mild-mannered Mokka into something properly aggressive. We’re talking:

  • Wide wheel arches that could comfortably hide a set of gravel-spec rally wheels
  • A bonnet scoop (likely fake, but it looks the business)
  • Rally-style LED light bars front and rear
  • A roof spoiler that means serious business

It’s all finished in a livery that wouldn’t look out of place on a works rally car, complete with the iconic Opel Motorsport flashes. The production version will likely tone things down, but expect the pumped-up proportions to remain.

Performance to Back Up the Looks

Underneath the rally-inspired bodywork lies some serious hardware:

  • A dual-motor electric powertrain producing 280bhp
  • All-wheel drive as standard (obviously)
  • A 0-62mph time in the low 5-second range

That’s hot hatch territory, let alone hot crossover. The real question is whether Vauxhall will give it the chassis to match – we’re hoping for uprated suspension and proper performance brakes to handle all that instant electric torque.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The Mokka GSE represents something genuinely new – a proper performance electric crossover that doesn’t cost money. It’s proof that EVs can be fun, even in practical body styles.

For Vauxhall, it’s a chance to:

  • Rekindle their performance heritage (remember the Astra VXR?)
  • Appeal to younger buyers tired of boring electric SUVs
  • Showcase their EV tech in a more exciting package

The Catch (Because There Always Is One)

  • Range will take a hit from all that performance
  • The price will be steep for a Vauxhall (likely £40k+)
  • Will it handle as good as it looks?

The Mokka GSE is expected to launch in late 2024, with first deliveries in early 2025. If Vauxhall gets this right, it could be the surprise performance hit of the year.

One thing’s for sure – the electric performance revolution just got a lot more interesting.
