Volvo is gearing up for what could be its most important electric car yet—the EX60. Positioned between the EX90 and EX30, this new mid-size electric SUV is set to arrive in 2026, taking on the likes of the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, and Audi Q6 e-tron.
Testing is set to kick off later this year, and while Volvo remains tight-lipped on the full spec sheet, early details suggest the EX60 will be a key player in the brand’s all-electric future.
Filling the Gap Between EX90 and EX30
Volvo’s current EV lineup is either big or small—you’ve got the full-size EX90 at one end and the compact EX30 at the other. The EX60 will sit perfectly in between, offering a practical alternative for those who find the EX90 too large but need more space than the EX30 can provide.
It’ll replace the current XC60, which has been a best-seller for Volvo. Given the XC60’s success, expectations for the EX60 are sky-high.
A Premium EV to Rival the Best
Volvo has made no secret of its ambitions to go fully electric by 2030. The EX60 will play a crucial role in that transition, offering a blend of luxury, performance, and sustainability to compete with established German and American rivals.
Expect it to sit on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the same architecture underpinning the EX90. This means big battery options, rapid charging, and serious range figures. While official numbers aren’t out yet, a 400+ mile range wouldn’t be surprising, given the EX90 can manage around 373 miles on a charge.
Design: A Sleek Evolution
Volvo’s design language has matured beautifully over the years, and the EX60 will likely carry over elements from the EX90 and EX30. That means:
- A clean, minimalist aesthetic with sleek LED lighting.
- Aerodynamic efficiency, helping boost range.
- A premium, tech-heavy cabin, with a Google-powered infotainment system.
It’s safe to assume Volvo will pack the EX60 with sustainable materials, following the lead of the EX30, which uses recycled plastics, wool, and plant-based materials.
Performance and Powertrains
While Volvo hasn’t released drivetrain details, we can make some educated guesses. Expect:
- Single-motor (RWD) and dual-motor (AWD) versions, much like the EX90.
- Power outputs starting around 400bhp, with possible performance variants hitting 500bhp or more.
- A 100kWh+ battery option, ensuring long-distance capability.
- Ultra-fast charging, likely 10-80% in around 30 minutes.
Given Volvo’s push for safety and driver assistance, the EX60 should also feature the brand’s latest semi-autonomous driving tech, with advanced sensors and LIDAR similar to what’s found in the EX90.
A More Affordable Luxury EV?
While the EX90 starts at over £96,000, the EX60 will likely be more accessible, undercutting the big SUV while still offering a premium experience. Pricing could start around £55,000, making it a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Audi Q6 e-tron.
When Will It Arrive?
Volvo is set to begin testing later this year, which means camouflaged prototypes should start hitting the road soon. A full reveal in 2025 seems likely, with the EX60 launching in early 2026.
With Volvo’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and Scandinavian luxury, the EX60 could be the brand’s most important EV yet. If it delivers on range, performance, and price, it might just be the perfect electric SUV for those who want a premium experience without the six-figure price tag.
