is shifting up a gear in its quest to become a fully electric car brand. Leading this charge are the newly rebranded electric versions of the C40 Recharge crossover and XC40 Recharge SUV, now known as the EC40 and EX40. This piece explores the models’ new features, powertrain options and their place in Volvo’s electrified future whilst maintaining a balanced and objective perspective.

The Uniformed Approach

Volvo’s move towards a more simplified and coherent naming structure aligns the EC40 and EX40 with their electric vehicle (EV) counterparts, the EX30 and EX90 SUVs. This is part of Volvo’s trajectory towards a fully electric future, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to electric mobility.

Expanded Powertrain Options and Enhanced Performance

Both the EC40 and EX40 will now benefit from a Single Motor Extended Range powertrain, promising a considerable range of up to 346 miles for the EC40 and 343 miles for the EX40. With a 78kWh battery (75kWh usable capacity), these models flex their strength with a 252hp electric motor producing 420Nm of torque. The highest charging speed to replenish the battery is an impressive 140kW.

Volvo will also offer a Performance software upgrade for Twin Motor versions of the EC40 and EX40, boosting power by 34hp from 408hp to 442hp, enabling quicker responses and additional Performance mode for the drivers.

Trimming the Range and Pricing

Volvo has set out to simplify its pricing structure. The EC40 and EX40 Plus and Ultra models now share similar on-the-road prices. Visually, the EC40 stands out with a contrasting black roof and a new Sand Dune exterior colour option introduced across the range.

PHEV Changes and Enhanced Efficiency:

Adding to Volvo’s electrified progression, the ‘Recharge’ name has been removed from all plug-in hybrid models. On a similar note, improvements to the B5 mild-hybrid petrol engine featured in the XC60 and XC90 SUVs translate to better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions, underlining Volvo’s commitment to sustainability.

Volvo is driving forward on its path to complete electrification. The introduction of the EC40 and EX40, complete with extended range powertrains, unified naming, and range-specific enhancements, validate the brand’s dedication to its electric future. However, the implementation of these advancements and their reception by the market will be the ultimate test of the brand’s vision.
