The dust is barely settled from ‘s latest XC90 update, and the renowned automaker is again making waves. The much-anticipated return of the S90 is now imminent, and the ES90, its all-electric reinvention, is garnering significant attention.

While official details have yet to emerge, it appears the saloon will borrow some attributes from the EX90, specifically the massive 111kWh battery nestled into the car’s flooring. This formidable power source will support up to 250kW charging and boasts an impressive 374-mile range.

The Groundwork for Volvo’s Electric Future

An exciting departure for Volvo, the ES90 will be built on a fresh modular architecture that’s set to underpin all the brand’s future electric cars, starting with the EX90.

One standout feature of this new direction is the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. This ingenuous system will allow comprehensive control over the car’s electronics and connectivity, a significant advancement given the increasing complexity of computerised components in modern vehicles.

And here’s the cherry on top: the new tech stack is set to be empowered by an Nvidia chip and features an Android-based interface. The EX90 will be the first to receive this upgrade, and subsequently, these advancements will cascade to benefit the ES90, forming a strong foundation for Volvo’s EV range.

The EX60: Another Leap Forward for Volvo’s EV Line-up

The evolution of the Superset tech stack for the ES90 will also inform the development of the forthcoming all-electric EX60. Slotted to sit between the smaller EX30, the EX60 will likely emulate many characteristics of the XC60, but in a purely electric format.

A speculative launch date for the ES90 is Spring 2025, followed by the EX60. As Volvo braces to make a significant impact on the EV market, stay tuned to EV Performance for more updates on this exciting development.
