As we enter a new era of vehicular technology and navigation, Cars and announce their pioneering partnership with tech industry titan, Google. With the introduction of Google’s High Definition (HD) map technology, their collaboration seeks to push the boundaries and set the benchmark in the rapidly evolving world of autonomous driving.

Equipped with cutting-edge sensor technology, the Volvo EX90 promises to offer an unparalleled driving experience. Lidar, cameras, and radars combine to comprehend the car’s environment, ensuring optimal safety for every journey. However, the key to further enhancing assisted-driving technologies and eventually achieving fully autonomous driving lies in an ability to interpret the environment in minute detail – both in the immediate vicinity and in the far distances beyond the vehicle’s visual range.

Introducing Google’s HD Map

Google’s HD map stands at the intersection of this revolutionary leap. Designed specifically for automakers, the HD map provides meticulously detailed and up-to-the-minute road information, delivering an unmatched level of understanding of the car’s surroundings.

The synergy between Volvo Cars and Google has been further strengthened as they become the first automakers to integrate this technology into their vehicles. The newly unveiled Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3 are primed to lead the charge in this innovative endeavour.

Benefits of Google’s HD Map Integration

By assimilating Google’s HD map with the Volvo EX90’s sophisticated sensor set, the possibilities for assisted-driving features are vast. This includes lane change assistance and Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist technology and sets the stage for the development of future autonomous driving functionality.

“Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving,” said COO and Deputy CEO, Javier Varela, stressing Volvo Cars’ commitment to working with technology leaders and achieving safer, more enjoyable driving experiences for users.

The Future of Driving Technology

In collaboration with Zenseact, a company specialising in safety software, Volvo aims to create a more predictable, safe, and comfortable driving experience. Combining data from Google’s HD map with information collected from their exterior sensors, including lidar and specialist software developed by Zenseact, Volvo is forging a path towards zero collision driving.

CEO of Zenseact, Ödgärd Andersson, highlights the significance of this cooperative endeavour: “Zenseact is proud to work alongside Volvo Cars and Google on the implementation of this game-changing technology for assisted and, later on, autonomous driving. It will play an important role in our journey towards zero collisions.”

What to Expect

In the future, vehicles equipped with Google’s HD map and Volvo’s Pilot Assist will have an improved understanding of their environment. This integration will further aid in the introduction of autonomous driving technology, bringing us one step closer to a future where vehicles not only transport us but navigate the world around them with precision, safety, and efficiency.

Volvo’s quest to deliver “Freedom to Move in a personal, sustainable and safe way” is evident in their commitment to becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030, with the ambition of being a climate-neutral company by 2040. With plans in motion and the technology advancing, the future of autonomous driving is within our reach.
