isn’t playing it safe anymore. The all-new ES90—its most advanced, all-electric saloon—is coming in 2025, and it’s got one goal: to shake up the premium EV segment. Packing serious performance, a futuristic interior, and next-gen safety tech, the ES90 is a Scandinavian alternative to the i5 and Model S.

More Than Just an Electric S90

At first glance, the ES90 looks like a sleeker, more aerodynamic version of the S90, but this is no simple EV conversion. Built on Volvo’s new SPA2 platform, the ES90 shares its underpinnings with the EX90 SUV but takes a lower, sportier stance. It’s longer and wider than the outgoing S90, with a drag coefficient optimised for maximum efficiency.

Design-wise, it follows Volvo’s modern aesthetic: clean lines, a bold front-end, and an unbroken rear light bar that screams sophistication. The ES90 doesn’t need flashy vents or aggressive grilles—it lets Scandinavian minimalism do the talking.

Big Power, Bigger Range

Volvo hasn’t held back with performance. The ES90 will launch with dual-motor, all-wheel-drive options, and in flagship form, it’ll punch out over 500bhp. That means a 0-62mph time under 4 seconds, making it a proper Tesla rival.

Battery-wise, expect a 100kWh+ pack, delivering a range of over 350 miles per charge. And thanks to its 800V electrical architecture, ultra-fast charging is on the cards—expect a 10-80% charge in around 25 minutes if you find the right charger.

Volvo is also introducing bidirectional charging, so the ES90 can power your home or even charge other EVs. It’s a feature we’re seeing more of in premium EVs, and Volvo is pushing hard to make it standard across its future lineup.

An Interior That Feels Like the Future

Inside, the ES90 is all about sustainability and tech. The cabin is packed with recycled materials, minimalist Scandinavian design, and a huge portrait-style infotainment screen running Google’s latest software. The instrument cluster is pared back, focusing on a head-up display and AI-assisted voice controls to keep distractions low.

Then there’s the sound system—a Bowers & Wilkins setup, tuned for ultimate clarity, making your road trip playlist sound as good as it does in a recording studio.

Rear passengers aren’t left out either. Volvo is reportedly working on a next-gen rear-seat experience, with reclining seats, premium materials, and possibly even a screen system for long journeys.

Safety? Of Course, It’s a Volvo

It wouldn’t be a Volvo if it didn’t rewrite the rulebook on crash protection and driver assistance tech. The ES90 is expected to come with Lidar-based semi-autonomous driving, using Nvidia-powered AI to make it one of the smartest cars on the road.

Volvo has already said it wants to eliminate fatal accidents in its new cars, and the ES90 will be a flagship for that mission. Expect adaptive safety systems, AI-driven accident prediction, and possibly even an interior health-monitoring system.

Price and Arrival

Volvo hasn’t confirmed UK pricing, but expect it to start around £70,000, climbing to £90,000+ for high-spec variants. That puts it in direct competition with the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE, and Tesla Model S—all of which should be paying attention.

Deliveries are set for late 2025, with a full reveal expected later this year. If Volvo plays this right, the ES90 could be the best all-electric luxury saloon yet.
