The electric revolution has seen countless SUVs and crossovers, but ‘s ID.7 Tourer offers a refreshing alternative for those who prefer the practicality and elegance of an estate. With its sleek design, spacious interior, and cutting-edge technology, the ID.7 Tourer aims to be the go-to choice for families and professionals who value versatility without sacrificing luxury or performance. Here’s my take on this EV estate after a hands-on drive in the Pro S Match variant.

First Impressions: A Welcome Return to Estates

As someone who has always appreciated estate cars, the ID.7 Tourer struck the right chord. Approaching 40, I find estates more appealing than ever, and the ID.7 Tourer’s exterior confirmed my preference. Its sleek lines and balanced proportions are a welcome departure from the bulkier SUV trend. The illuminated Volkswagen badge and continuous light bar across the front add a futuristic touch without overdoing it. The 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels perfectly complement the overall aesthetic, adding a dash of sophistication while maintaining a classic look.

Interior: Space and Comfort for Every Passenger

Step inside, and you’ll immediately notice the spaciousness. The estate layout offers a generous 605 litres of boot space, which expands to an impressive 1,714 litres with the rear seats folded. The flat load area, nearly two metres long, is a dream for those who need to haul large items or pack for extended trips.

Rear passengers benefit from Volkswagen’s dedicated EV platform, which eliminates the central tunnel, creating a flat floor. This design ensures ample legroom for three adults. Heated rear seats, USB-C ports, and independent climate control make the back seats as inviting as the front.

Up front, the driver and passenger enjoy ergoActive massage seats with ventilation, part of the Interior Pack. Soft-touch materials, ambient lighting, and a 15-inch infotainment screen with a vastly improved user interface elevate the cabin experience. The 8.1-speaker Harman Kardon sound system adds to the premium feel, delivering crisp audio that complements long drives.

Technology: AR and Intuitive Assistance

Tech enthusiasts will appreciate the augmented reality (AR) head-up display, a standard feature across all models. This innovative system projects navigation cues and essential driving information directly onto the windshield, ensuring you never miss a turn. The inclusion of wireless smartphone charging, USB-C ports front and rear, and Volkswagen’s ID. Light system adds to the futuristic yet user-friendly vibe. Oh and let’s not forget the added bonus of ChatGTP ready to answer all those questions like… “How do airplanes stay in the air?”

One standout feature is the panoramic roof with glass. Controlled electronically, it can switch from transparent to opaque, offering shade or light at the touch of a button. It’s a gimmick perhaps, but one that adds a wow factor, particularly during sunny days.

Performance: Smooth and Adaptable

Under the hood, the Pro S Match variant boasts an 86 kWh battery paired with Volkswagen’s APP550 electric motor. Delivering 286 PS and 545 Nm of torque, it accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds. The top speed is 112 mph, and with a range of up to 424 miles, you can easily drive from London to Edinburgh without needing a recharge. Fast charging capabilities allow a 10-80% boost in just 26 minutes at 200 kW public DC stations.

On the road, the ID.7 Tourer feels balanced and composed. In Comfort mode, the suspension is soft, making city driving a breeze. Adaptive Chassis Control tightens things up in Sport mode, improving responsiveness. While it doesn’t deliver a punchy, neck-snapping acceleration, it’s more than capable of getting you out of tight situations. However, for those craving more performance, the upcoming GTX version may be worth the wait.

Safety and Driver Assistance: Comprehensive and Confidence-Inspiring

Volkswagen has packed the ID.7 Tourer with an extensive suite of safety features. Lane Assist, Side Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist work seamlessly to keep you safe on highways and in congested urban environments. The proactive occupant protection system, forward collision warning, and dynamic road sign display add layers of security. Park Assist Plus, with a memory function, takes the stress out of parking in tight spaces, making city driving more convenient.

Final Thoughts: A Compelling Estate for the EV Era

The Tourer successfully blends practicality with modern luxury, offering a well-rounded package for those seeking an estate with electric power. It’s spacious, tech-forward, and delivers a smooth driving experience that adapts to various needs. While performance enthusiasts might crave a little more punch, the ID.7 Tourer excels in offering comfort, range, and advanced features.

For estate lovers like me, it’s a welcome addition to the EV landscape. Whether you’re a long-time estate enthusiast or someone exploring alternatives to SUVs, the ID.7 Tourer is worth serious consideration
