‘s unforgettable 356 model, both as a convertible and a coupe variant, has secured its position in the brand’s rich heritage. The 356 Speedster, in particular, has been synonymous with glamour and fame, making the task of updating it for the modern electric era a challenging feat. Enter the Vision 357 Speedster, which follows the impressive Vision 357 Coupe unveiled in January 2023.

Replacing Fossil Fuels with Electric Power

In a departure from its petrol-powered predecessors, which gained their horsepower from the formidable 493bhp Cayman GT4 RS, the Vision 357 Speedster has embraced the electric future. Porsche has integrated the electric motors and battery tech from the groundbreaking Mission R into the new Speedster. However, the company remains silent about the power this updated speedster carries, encouraging speculation about a powertrain potentially inspired by the dual-motor, 1,073bhp Mission R.

A Blend of Motorsport Spirit and Modern Design

The team behind the record-smashing 919 Hybrid and the Mission R has engineered and developed the new Speedster. This explains why it sits on a Cayman 718 GT4 Clubsport chassis, exuding motorsport spirit from every angle. Along with modern elements like front and rear diffusers, protruding side skirts, aerodynamically enhanced magnesium 20in wheels, and distinctive graphics, the car maintains the classic Fifties Speedster silhouette, paying homage to the past.

A Tribute to Porsche’s Rich History

The Vision 357 Speedster incorporates several references to Porsche’s history, including the ’75’ and ‘1948’ graphics indicating the brand’s anniversary year and the release year of the first 356 model. In addition, Porsche has crafted ‘comic-style’ unicorns, which are situated in the farthest corner of the side skirts. The car also features aerodynamic cameras in place of traditional wing mirrors.

As Michael Mauer, Porsche’s head of style, puts it, “The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster symbolises the brand’s essence: the confluence of ultimate driving pleasure and dynamics with a minimalist form. As demonstrated by the Mission X unveiled a few weeks ago, even with new design elements, the Porsche DNA continues to shine through.”

Porsche’s electric transition of the 357 Speedster successfully encapsulates both the brand’s iconic past and its electric future, further cementing Porsche’s commitment to creating thrilling yet sustainable driving experiences.
