From a recent filing with the Chinese government, an enticing glimpse of the new electric Mini John Cooper Works hatchback has been unveiled. This spicy hot hatch boasts a single motor, propelling a hefty 255bhp through its front wheels. This is a bold jump of 40bhp when compared to its contemporaries such as the current Mini Cooper SE and the Alpine A290 GTS.
The Power-to-Weight Ratio Game
The kerb weight of the new JCW is stated to be 1670kg, indicating a rise of 65kg from the SE. Interestingly, this offers a power-to-weight ratio of 153bhp per tonne, outdoing the A290 GTS at 145bhp/tonne. However, it still lags a bit behind the previous petrol-powered JCW, holding a record of 181bhp/tonne.
Impressive Acceleration
The 0-62mph acceleration time for this new JCW remains undisclosed in the filing. One thing is for sure, it will undeniably beat the 6.7sec sprint time achieved by the Cooper SE. Owing to the instant torque delivered by the electric motor, there’s a high chance that it could even compete with the fastest Mini hatch to date – the old JCW GP. The latter’s 301bhp engine enabled it to finish the 0-62mph in an impressive 5.2sec.

Battery Life and Range
The new electric JCW is expected to utilise the same 49.2kWh battery as the Cooper SE. Although, the larger 18in wheels and stickier tyres could potentially reduce the range from the 249 miles offered by the Cooper SE.
The Electric Mini Aceman JCW Crossover
In addition to the JCW hot hatch, the electric Mini Aceman JCW crossover was also unveiled in the filing. With similar styling cues, including a blacked-out nose and more aggressive skirting, and an identical 255bhp motor, it’s a bit heavier weighing in at 1768kg.
The updated Mini John Cooper Works hatchback and the new Aceman JCW crossover show promising signs of technological advancements and design enhancements. As the electric vehicle market continues to heat up, it’s fascinating to see brands like Mini leading the charge by combining power, style, and electric drivability in their newest releases.
