When winter temperatures plummet below -30°C and you’re near the Arctic Circle, you’d think cars would be the last thing on anyone’s mind. Alpine, however, disagrees. Their upcoming hot hatch, the A290, is currently undergoing rigorous testing in Sweden’s harshest conditions. This article is an in-depth exploration of the A290’s journey, from its early development stages to its impending release in June 2024.

Alpine A290 In Depth
The Alpine A290 has been under development for over two years. As part of the final phase, the company’s engineering teams have returned to the Arctic Circle to put the A290 through its paces. This test phase brings to the table a new approach – an Alpine camouflage-clad A290, showcasing its power and agility.
Handling and agility, according to Alpine CEO Philippe Krief, are at the heart of the A290’s design. As the first electric hot hatch sport car from Alpine, the A290 seems poised to make its mark. The Arctic test stage has served a dual purpose, confirming the vehicle’s performance in challenging conditions while also fine-tuning its all-weather capabilities.

A290 Unveiled
Sub-zero temperatures have provided the perfect backdrop for an in-depth examination of the A290. The focus of the test has been the car’s dynamic performance, ensuring engine responsiveness and driving precision stand up against the toughest of conditions. This full-scale test of technical parameters has ensured that the A290 meets and exceeds the necessary performance levels for an electric hot hatch.
The Arctic tests have not only been about performance. Alpine’s engineering team has been paying close attention to essential features in the harsh conditions, scrutinising the effectiveness of the heating system, defogging and defrosting quality, and the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) on snow.

The A290 Dimensions, Equipped & Dressed Up
For the first outing, the A290 was unveiled in its definitive bodywork, sporting the ‘A-Arrow’ logo on the roof, and the Alpine Blue colour scheme. The validated dimensions of the A290 have also been disclosed: the compact B-segment sports car has a length of 3,990 mm, a width of 1,820 mm, a height of 1,520 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,530 mm.
A special feature of the A290 is the new Alpine sport steering wheel, wrapped in Nappa leather. The design includes a flattened surface and a centre point, reminiscent of Alpine’s motorsport heritage. The wheel cleverly incorporates three essential functions borrowed from Alpine’s Formula 1 steering wheels: OV (Overtake), RCH (Recharge), and easy one-touch access Drive modes.
Partnering With Michelin
When it comes to achieving optimal performance in winter conditions, tyres play a crucial part. Alpine and Michelin have extended their partnership with the A290, developing three specific tyre types for the model: a MICHELIN Pilot Alpin 5 winter tyre, a MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV for energy efficiency, and a MICHELIN Pilot Sport S5 for top-tier performance.
With its upcoming launch in June 2024, the A290 is setting new benchmarks for future electric hot hatches. While there is much anticipation, it’s clear that Alpine has taken a meticulous approach to this vehicle’s development. The A290 is shaping up to be a car that showcases Alpine’s dedication to dynamic performance, even under extreme weather conditions. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished product and how it performs on the open road.
