In a move that has caught the UK and Irish markets off guard, Tesla has confirmed that its Model S and Model X will cease to be available for the foreseeable future. This confirmation comes after a two-year period of uncertainty during which customers could place an order for these models, however, stability regarding the delivery date and final price remained unresolved.
Refunds and Alternatives for Customers:
In light of this unexpected news, Tesla has communicated the decision to all customers who had placed reservations and orders for these models. As a compensation measure, three alternative options have been offered. Firstly, the customer can opt for a credit of £2,000 towards a Model 3 or Model Y in the UK and a credit of €2,000 in Ireland. Secondly, purchase a left-hand drive vehicle from Tesla’s existing inventory. Lastly, they can simply cancel their order to receive a full refund.
An International Impact:
The discontinuation of these models is not confined to the UK and Ireland alone. There are emerging reports from Australia, another market favouring right-hand drive, that suggest similar measures are being taken. In stark contrast, both the Model S and Model X have been updated and are actively sold in North America. The updated models boast new trim options, performance enhancements, and a refreshed interior featuring the much-debated ‘yoke’ steering wheel.
What Next for Right-Hand Drive in Tesla’s Portfolio:
Despite the advances in Model S and Model X in North America, there hasn’t been any production of right-hand drive versions, sparking doubts about their future existence. The high-performance Tesla Model S Plaid, which was tested in its Track Package form recently, might also never see a right-hand drive version. It remains to be seen how Tesla plans to cater to markets that favour right-hand drive cars in the future.
