Smart, after receiving full homologation, has lifted the veil off the powertrain details for its second new electric vehicle (EV), the Smart #3. This all-electric coupe-style SUV comes with two powertrain options and is available in four trim levels.
We have been privy to a considerable amount of information about the Smart #3 – its artistic styling, the comfort of its interiors, and the technological aspects that it brings to the table. The company has now announced that a 200kW motor, backed by a 66kWh battery, will power the three main trim levels – Pro+, Premium, and the 25th Anniversary Edition.
Performance of the Smart #3
This enables the Smart #3 to sprint from 0-62mph in a quick 5.8 seconds, propelled through a rear-wheel-drive setup that pitches out 253 lb-ft torque.
The Brabus performance edition, with its dedicated 315kW setup and dual motors (200 on the rear axle, 115 on the front), offers a more robust drive. Powered by the same 66kWh lithium nickel cobalt manganese battery, it breezes through 0-62mph in a swift 3.7 seconds, complete with all-wheel drive and a hefty 400 lb-ft torque.
Putting the #3 in Perspective
To draw a comparison and garner a better perspective, the all-electric vehicle currently third in sales volume in the UK, the Tesla Model Y, delivers torque around 487 lb-ft in its Long Range Performance version.
The Smart #3 is not far behind, boasting of a range between 270 and 282 miles (WLTP combined). The Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, claims to deliver a slightly higher range of 283 (or 331 miles in its Long Range version). The competition seems to be tightening!
The Vision of Smart
Dirk Adelmann, the maestro at smart Europe, said: “Being unconventional has always been part of Smart’s identity. With the Smart #3, we aim to broaden our offerings in the all-electric compact SUV category, catering to all driving requirements in urban and suburban settings alike, while simultaneously progressing towards a more dynamic coupe design. We eagerly await to see the impact our first coupe-style SUV will have on the European market.”
While the Smart #3 looks set to revolutionise the electric compact SUV category, only time will tell how it fares against stiff competition. The EV industry awaits with bated breath.
