In the year 2009, an ambitious Mate Rimac breathed life into his car company, Rimac Automobili, by creating an electric E30 BMW 3 Series. Today, that venture has grown into the colossal Rimac Group, with Mate Rimac also calling the shots at Bugatti. The latest development in this story of exponential growth is the birth of Rimac Energy.
Rimac Energy, an offshoot of Rimac Technology, intends to exploit its prowess in crafting groundbreaking electric vehicle technology to usher in a new generation of stationary Energy Storage Systems (ESS).
The Landscape Of Energy Storage Systems
ESS are not unfamiliar to those acquainted with Tesla‘s Powerwall and Megapack. The Powerwall, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, is a renowned phenomenon in private homes, while the Megapack serves commercial purposes on a larger scale.
The Masterplan Of Rimac Energy
Rimac Energy sets its sights on ‘commercial & industrial applications’ by generating ‘utility-scale’ battery packs. Although detailed associated with the resultant ESS remain under wraps, a significant revelation is that it “curbs efficiency losses by up to 50 per cent while shrinking the system footprint by up to 40 per cent in comparison to current cutting-edge solutions”. This bold statement has undeniably sent ripples through the industry.
Initial systems are slated to be up and running by 2024, paving the way for full-scale production in Croatia come 2025. The future of Energy Storage Systems is getting a facelift, and Rimac Energy is leading the charge.
