In an unprecedented demonstration, world-leading extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology pioneer StoreDot, in collaboration with Swedish electric performance car brand Polestar, has shattered previous EV charging records. Their groundbreaking technology charges an electric vehicle to 80% in a staggering 10 minutes. This pioneering achievement is set to fuel the transition towards broad-scale electric vehicle adoption, offering a solution to a key concern among prospective EV owners – charging anxiety.
The Technology Behind the Record-Breaking Demo
In this revolutionary feat, a fully drivable Polestar 5 prototype was powered by a 77kWh battery pack fitted with StoreDot’s extreme fast charging high energy silicon-dominant battery cells. The test procedure maintained a consistent charge rate of over 310kW, peaking at an impressive 370kW. Throughout the procedure, the battery pack parameters, including temperature, voltage, and charged capacity, were monitored, ensuring the battery never exceeded its target operating temperature.
Under the Bonnet: Key Statistics and Features
The groundbreaking technology showcased by StoreDot and Polestar has the potential to significantly influence the future of EV adoption. The 77kWh tested battery pack boasting a consistent charge rate over 310kW and a peak charging power exceeding 370kW was the centrepiece of the demo. This feat was achieved with StoreDot’s ‘drop-in’ ability that enables seamless integration into an existing car model, ushering a new era of fast EV charging using available infrastructure, not just proprietary chargers.
Eliminating Charging Anxiety: A Major Step for EV Adoption
One of the biggest hurdles to widespread EV adoption is what’s commonly known as “charging anxiety”. StoreDot and Polestar’s breakthrough in 10-minute charging technology effectively eradicates this concern, bridging the gap between the ease of petrol vehicle refuelling and electric vehicle charging. As StoreDot CEO Dr Doron Myersdorf states, this technology makes it possible to add 200 miles in under 10 minutes, revolutionising the EV ownership experience by removing the twin barriers of range and charging anxiety.
The Future of Battery Technology: Silicon-Dominant Cells
While conventional graphite anodes are already approaching their theoretical performance limits, StoreDot’s silicon-based anode technology can keep pushing the boundaries of energy density and charging rate for several more battery generations. This design fosters sustained innovation in areas like extreme fast charging. Thus, this technology not only provides a breakthrough solution but also sets the pace for future advancements in the field.
StoreDot and Polestar’s demonstration marks a significant step towards the future of electric vehicle technology. The ability to charge an EV to 80% within 10 minutes addresses a critical obstacle to widespread adoption, charging anxiety. However, this is just the beginning. StoreDot’s XFC technology promises to continue evolving, with every innovation opening up new pathways for accelerated charging and greater energy density. As we move towards an increasingly electrified future, the impact of such breakthroughs cannot be underestimated.
