In a major step towards affordable and renewable electric vehicle charging, Polestar announces two strategic partnerships with Ohme, the home charging platform, and Octopus Energy, the green energy provider. This trilateral collaboration seeks to offer Polestar customers in the UK the opportunity to drive their EVs cheaper and greener by harnessing renewable energy for home and on-the-go charging.
Jonathan Goodman, Head of Polestar UK, highlights the potential of the initiative with a striking comparison: “By charging your EV on renewable energy, whether at home or away, the carbon footprint can be more than halved during the car’s lifecycle compared to a petrol car. Our partnership with Ohme and Octopus makes this process easier, simple and effective for our customers and at the same time offers significant off-peak savings”.
Essentials of the Partnership
This long-term partnership offers both retail and fleet customers purchasing a new or pre-owned car, a preferential price starting at £925 for an Ohme charger with standard installation. Between 1st October and 31st December 2023, customers placing new or used orders through polestar.com will receive a complimentary Ohme EV home charger with standard installation or £900 in Octopus Electroverse public charging credit.
Furthermore, Polestar has collaborated with Octopus Energy to provide £30 credit when customers switch their energy supply to Octopus. This switch will grant them access to cheaper and greener EV charging tariffs at home and up to an 8% discount on public charging through the Electroverse App.
Polestar’s Commitment – Transparent Carbon Footprint Assessment
Polestar stands out globally as a manufacturer that offers its customers full transparency on the climate impact of its cars through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This assessment places a clear emphasis on the importance of recharging cars with renewable energy to bring the break-even point (the point at which the car’s environmental impact equals that of a petrol or diesel car) down.
The LCA has also aided Polestar in reducing the carbon consumption in the manufacturing phase for the Polestar 2 long-range dual motor by 3.1 tonnes, from 26.2 tonnes of CO2e to 23.1 tonnes in just three years.
Further Carbon Reductions for Customers
For customers who switch to suppliers like Octopus that deliver 100% green electricity to their home, the break-even point for a Polestar 2 reduces significantly. If charged with fossil fuel-produced energy, the break-even point is around 50,000 miles (79,000 km). However, if charged with renewable energy, the break-even point drops to around 30,000 miles (49,000 km).
For the more technically geared, charging a Polestar 2 Long range Single motor – featuring an 82kWh battery and an Ohme smart charger on a smart off-peak tariff such as Octopus Go – could cost as little as £6.15 for a 406-mile range (WLTP). In contrast, charging on the Standard Variable Tariff would cost £22.96. Therefore, customers on Intelligent Octopus Go can save up to £600 on their charging costs over a year compared to a standard variable tariff.
