The idyllic beauty of the UK’s National Parks is now more accessible than ever, thanks to a sustainable partnership between BMW UK and the National Parks. From the wild heathlands of New Forest to the rugged highlands of Cairngorms, visitors can now embark on eco-friendly journeys, feeling the power of their electric vehicles (EVs) with the gentle whispering of the wind in their ears. This article delves into the partnership’s initiative to increase accessibility to the UK’s green spaces via EV technology while taking a closer look at BMW’s commitment to decarbonising travel and promoting youth involvement in nature preservation.
A Partnership for Greener Journeys
Securing the future of our natural landscapes and educating future generations about their importance has never been more critical. The collaboration between BMW UK and the New Forest National Park, as part of the Recharge in Nature partnership, infuses hope into bolting such a future. As Graham Biggs, BMW UK Corporate Communications Director, underlines, this partnership is “leading the charge towards more sustainable tourism in the New Forest” while extending the ambit of EV charging facilities to the beloved landscapes of the UK.
Revving Up the Charging Infrastructure
Making the vast, enchanting expanses of the UK’s National Parks more accessible is a significant part of this partnership. The twin EV charging point in Jubilee Field Car Park, Sway, marks a notable milestone on this journey. It allows more EV drivers to explore the New Forest National Park, opening up more zero-emission journeys. This initiative, projected to install 135 EV charging points across all 15 National Parks by 2025, is a bold step towards embracing the quieter, sustainable drives of the future.
Connecting Future Custodians with Nature
The partnership is not only about hardware investment, but there is also human investment. The funding of two apprentice rangers and the support of about 80 young people through the Youth Action Programme are direct attempts to forge stronger bonds between young individuals and nature. By nurturing practical skills in environmental conservation and stimulating discussions around combating the climate crisis, BMW actively fosters the coming generation’s engagement with nature preservation.
BMW’s Bigger Picture: Emission Targets and Initiatives
BMW Group, a signatory of the Paris Climate Agreement, is on a firm path to reduce its CO2 emissions per vehicle by at least 50% from the 2019 levels by 2030. The company’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 across its entire value chain resonates with this Recharge in Nature partnership.

The innovative partnership between BMW UK and UK’s National Parks exemplifies the harmonious amalgamation of technology and nature preservation. While significantly bolstering the UK’s rural EV charging infrastructure, the partnership also invests in equipping younger generations with the necessary skills and passion needed to protect these natural landscapes. However, it is important to note that the road to truly sustainable tourism is long and paved with numerous challenges. The escalating need for infrastructure, the growing demand for EVs, and the need for extensive public education require a concerted effort from not just automakers and nature organisations, but from every one of us.
