It’s official – Peugeot is bringing back its most famous badge. The GTI name, once worn by icons like the 205 and 208, is set to return, this time on a fully electric model. Peugeot’s new CEO Phil York confirmed that the e-208 GTI is in development and will land as the brand’s first all-electric hot hatch.
While many feared Peugeot’s shift to electrification might signal the end of its performance cars, this move shows the opposite. The GTI badge is too important to leave behind, and it’s coming back for the EV generation.
Based on Stellantis’ new electric platform
The e-208 GTI will sit on Stellantis‘ upcoming STLA Small platform, a flexible EV architecture designed specifically for compact electric cars. This new platform should offer improved dynamics, better packaging, and more efficient use of space compared to today’s CMP underpinnings.
Performance figures aren’t locked in yet, but insiders expect the e-208 GTI to produce over 200bhp. That would put it firmly against rivals like the Alpine A290 and the incoming Mini Electric JCW. Combine that with Peugeot’s reputation for fun-to-drive small cars, and there’s reason to believe this could be a proper hot hatch – even without a petrol engine.
The focus is still on fun
Peugeot’s priority isn’t just straight-line speed. The new e-208 GTI is being developed with driver engagement in mind. Expect sharp steering, a playful chassis, and maybe even some clever tech to recreate the connection drivers expect from a GTI. York suggested that Peugeot is working hard to ensure this new electric model carries the spirit of its predecessors.
Battery range will also be important. Peugeot will likely target around 250-300 miles on a single charge thanks to the latest battery tech from Stellantis, making sure the e-208 GTI is usable every day, not just for short blasts.
Subtle but sporty styling
Hot hatchbacks have always been about subtle aggression – and the e-208 GTI will continue that theme. Expect a lower ride height, bigger wheels, sportier bumpers and classic GTI details like red accents and a discreet badge. It won’t be extreme, but it will definitely separate itself from the standard e-208.
The cabin is also expected to get the GTI treatment, with sports seats, unique trims and Peugeot’s usual i-Cockpit layout, updated for the latest digital age.
Not just another EV
Peugeot is positioning the e-208 GTI as a car that brings the hot hatch formula into the EV world without losing its character. The aim is to deliver an everyday EV that’s affordable, fun, and easy to live with – without sacrificing the qualities that make a GTI special.
York has made it clear this is just the beginning of Peugeot’s next chapter. With more performance EVs likely to follow, the e-208 GTI could set the tone for Peugeot’s electric future.
