Your next MINI adventure will be electric

Hybrids just got smaller

We were just thinking the other day how it’d be really cool if MINI was the next brand to unveil information about versions of its upcoming models harnessing electric power, and voila, bosses at the firm have done just that this week, revealing that the next generation of its crossover, the Countryman, will utilise a plug-in hybrid power plant.

Why do we think the MINI will make such a good base for an EV? Well for one, MINIs have always been known for their chuck-ability and relatively low-powered thrills; ideal for a city-based electric vehicle then. Also, the MINI package is something that pretty much everyone knows and loves, meaning this could be one of the first mainstream small EV hatches to break into the mainstream.

Proper performance

We’re not entirely sure what combination of engine/electric motor will be used, but based on the limited information that has been released, we’re pleased to hear that MINI is certainly keen to keep the fun factor there with the Countryman PHEV. Promising speeds of up to 78mph in full EV mode, apparently “you need to step on the accelerator pedal very firmly to activate the second power source.” Hopefully that electric unit will be far more than just a gimmicky add-on, then…

“With this model we want to convince MINI customers of the benefits of hybrid drive, and impress everyone who already has hybrid driving experience with MINI’s unique go-kart driving feel,” says Sebastian Mackensen, head of the MINI brand. MINI is certainly using all the right buzzwords, isn’t it?

This is one car we seriously cannot wait to try out on the road when it’s released…
