isn’t playing nice anymore. The Chinese-British brand just unveiled its most serious challengers yet at – the IM5 saloon and IM6 SUV – and they’re packing enough heat to make Model 3 and Y owners question their life choices. With 800V architecture, sub-4-second acceleration, and tech that puts Tesla’s aging lineup to shame, MG is coming for the EV crown.

David Allison, MG’s Head of Product and Planning, threw down the gauntlet:
“MG has made EV ownership accessible exciting and different with the MG convertible leading the way for the brand. But now, we’re seeking to deliver technology leadership and innovation with MG IM, engaging with customers aspiring for the future, today.”

“This means MG IM5 Long Range can travel up to 441 miles on a single charge with the 100 kWh battery option sitting on a new 800V architecture capable of delivering a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 17 minutes. Exhilarating performance and dynamic handling, which MG will always have a passion for, comes with a digital chassis and truly potent acceleration from the powerful electric Hurricane motors with 0-62mph achieved in just 3.2 seconds for MG IM5, and 3.5 seconds for MG IM6.”

IM5 Saloon: The Model 3’s Worst Nightmare
This sleek four-door is gunning straight for Tesla’s jugular:

Performance:

  • 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds
  • 441-mile range (100kWh battery beats Model 3 LR’s 390 miles)
  • 800V charging (10-80% in 17 mins)
  • “Hurricane” motors with digital chassis control
  • Crap Mode (Helps you turn easier)

Tech That Makes Tesla Feel Old:

  • 26.3″ ultra-HD display (Model 3’s 15″ screen looks tiny)
  • Rainy Night Mode (automatically adjusts everything)
  • One Touch Park Assist (parallel parks better than you)
  • 9.98m turning circle (rear-wheel steering for the win)

MG IM6 SUV

MG’s taking aim at Tesla’s cash cow the Model Y with:

Family-Friendly Firepower:

  • 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds (quicker than base Model Y)
  • 400+ mile range from 100kWh battery
  • 7-seat option (Tesla still doesn’t offer this)
  • Panoramic roof standard (unlike Tesla’s optional glass)

Practical Touches Tesla Forgot:

  • 20-speaker audio with ceiling speakers
  • Double-layer laminated windows (peace from screaming kids)
  • Bi-directional charging (power your house during blackouts)

Priced To Make Elon Sweat
Here’s where MG drops the mic:

  • IM5 from £39,450 (vs Model 3’s £42,990)
  • IM5 Performance £48,495 (vs £59,990 for Model 3 Performance)
  • IM6 from £47,995 (vs Model Y’s £54,990)
  • First deliveries Q1 2026

The Verdict
With proper performance credentials, genuinely innovative tech, and pricing that undercuts Tesla significantly, MG’s IM models could finally be the EVs that make driving enthusiasts consider going electric. As Allison says: “Exhilarating performance and dynamic handling – which MG will always have a passion for.” The only question now – can MG’s software team keep up with the hardware’s promise? Either way, the EV game just got more interesting.
