is emerging as a forerunner in the EV revolution, thanks to its strategic partnership with Factorial Energy, to scale up the pioneering Solstice battery technology. This collaboration aims to introduce solid-state batteries in Mercedes-Benz cars by the close of this decade.

The Power Boosting Solstice

Solstice, the groundbreaking solid-state battery, boasts an impressive power density of 450 Wh/kg. For comparison’s sake, the most advanced regular EV or hybrid automobile batteries currently max out around 255Wh/kg, with less efficient models delivering a meagre 90Wh/kg. This vast enhancement in capacity undeniably implies a promising 80% increase in driving range for EVs powered by the Solstice.

Crucially, the Solstice’s 100+Ah nickel-metal solid-state batteries are rooted in Factorial’s unique Factorial Electrolyte System Technology (FEST). This platform uses a lithium-metal anode, a sulfide-based electrolyte, and a dry cathode, mitigating fire risks by eliminating a flammable liquid electrolyte. This improved battery chemistry additionally offers high thermal stability, reducing the need for extensive cooling in the battery pack. Plus, the process to manufacture these batteries aligns well with existing production setups.

Markus Schäfer, CTO of Mercedes Benz, expressed optimism, stating, “Solstice brings about significant enhancements in energy density and safety capabilities. These features are instrumental in our endeavour to produce electric vehicles that redefine standards in range, cost-effectiveness, and performance.”

Backed by Industry Stalwarts

It is important to take note that Factorial is not working in isolation. It enjoys the financial support of and , showcasing the industry-wide interest and faith in these technological advancements.

A compelling advancement, the Solstice battery, has the potential to revolutionise the EV segment, giving a massive push to the adoption and feasibility of electric mobility. The leap in capabilities offered by this technology puts Mercedes-Benz firmly on the fast track to a cleaner, more sustainable, and efficient transport future.
