Introducing the Volvo EX90, an electric seven-seat SUV that Volvo confidently presents not just as a mode of transport, but as an ‘exceptionally advanced computer on wheels’. This electrifying machine marks a significant development for Volvo and positions the Swedish manufacturer on the frontlines of the electric vehicle revolution.
In the words of CEO Jim Rowan, “The Volvo EX90 is a representation of where we stand now and the direction we’re headed in.” The EX90 is born electric and software-driven, embodying the pillars of future Volvo cars in terms of safety, technology, sustainability, design and customised consumer experience.
The Unseen Shield of Safety
The EX90 guarantees superior safety features – an assortment of state-of-the-art cameras, radars and lidar, linked to an NVIDIA DRIVE core computer that forms an ‘invisible shield of safety’ around the vehicle. The car can generate a real-time, 360-degree view of its surroundings and detect minute obstacles on the road from hundreds of metres away, irrespective of conditions or speed.
The EX90 also prioritises driver safety. Through sensor-technology and cameras, Volvo can track your attentiveness behind the wheel. If the sensors detect diminishing alertness, the car will provide you with a nudge; however, if you fall asleep, the car will safely halt and call for assistance.
A Tech Haven
The EX90 is not just about safety-driven tech. The 14.5-inch touchscreen burst with Google features and is 5G connected – perfect for streaming your favourite music. Your music will resonate through Bowers and Wilkins speakers, discreetly integrated into the headrests and dotted around the cabin.
In a technologically advanced world, even the car key has been reimagined. In the EX90, your smartphone acts as your key, encompassing the power to send virtual keys to others at your discretion. On approach, the EX90 will begin your personalised welcoming sequence and load all your settings and preferences, providing a seamless transition each time you take the wheel.
Performance and Specifications
The EX90 will be available in two twin-motor versions – the standard EX90 and the Performance. Each variant is equipped with a massive 107kWh usable battery. The standard version and Performance variant offers a whopping 364 miles and 360 miles of range respectively. The Performance version, with its 510bhp and 671 lb-ft, enables the heavy 2,818kg EX90 to accelerate from 0-62mph in a mere 4.9 seconds. Both versions offer 250kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10-80 per cent battery recharge in just 30 minutes.
The Promise of Sustainability
Volvo’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the new EX90 as well. A quarter of the aluminium and about 15 per cent of the steel used in its construction is recycled. This practice extends to the vehicle’s interior, where 48kg of the plastics and bio-based materials used are recycled.
Bi-directional charging is another unique feature. With the EX90, you can charge your vehicle at night (when electricity is less expensive) and use it as a large power bank for your home during the day. This forward-thinking approach is not only cost-effective but also key in reducing our carbon footprint.
The first deliveries in the UK are anticipated to commence at the start of 2024. The top-of-the-range, 22-inch wheeled Ultra trim will appear first, with the standard car priced at £96,255 and the Performance at £100,555. A more affordable £75,000 entry-level model will follow shortly after the launch.
Volvo’s bold statement with the EX90 clearly shows that the future of car manufacturing is not just about creating vehicles – it’s about innovating and pushing boundaries.
