Meet the RN24, Hyundai’s Pathfinding Concept
Hyundai continues to pave the way for high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) with the RN24, following the footsteps of its predecessor, the RN22e saloon and the hydrogen-fuelled N Vision 74 concept. With the RN24, Hyundai probes the boundaries of speed and drift in the EV future.
Two secret weapons in Hyundai’s arsenal make the RN24 possible: the heart-throbbing powertrain and advanced electronics from the lightning-quick Ioniq 5 N, coupled with invaluable rally experience gleaned from the World Rally Championship (WRC).
An Agile Powerhouse on Wheels
The RN24 harbours the same dual-motor configuration as the 5 N, bringing a mind-boggling 641 horsepower to the game. Hyundai engineers skilfully trimmed the wheelbase without compromising the 84kWh battery capacity, making it similar in dimension to the i20 N Rally 1 Hybrid.
Webbed together with ‘next-generation’ software, the RN24 is a masterclass in agility, fitting the most potent powertrain into the smallest feasible package. The result boasts exceptional tyre-burning prowess that’s apparent from the very first glance.
Rally-Inspired Components for Unrivalled Performance
From the suspension and dampers to the drive control logic system, rally-derived components can be found throughout the RN24. The control system allows for the adjustment of power and acceleration dynamics right from the steering wheel. This, coupled with a sensitised steering wheel, elevates the driving experience to a new level.
To maintain optimal working conditions for the battery and motor, Hyundai’s RN24 features cooling enhancements. The RN24’s sturdy subframes and unveiled roll cage give it a rugged exoskeleton that can compete against the likes of the Ariel Nomad 2.
Final Flourishes
The RN24 is topped with a touring car spoiler and 19-inch matte black forged wheels borrowed from the Elantra N. This, along with Rally Mode torque control, e-Handbrake for weight reduction, and side speakers for amplified sounds, augment the RN24’s functionality and sophistication in equal parts.
Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group at Hyundai, says that the RN24 epitomises Hyundai N’s commitment to pioneering EV motorsport technology by focusing less on raw numbers and more on the driving experience.
Impressive Performance Metrics
As a prototype, the RN24 is targeting 0-62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds, a top speed of 149 mph, and a weight of 1,880 kg – numbers that speak volumes about Hyundai’s uncompromised commitment to pushing boundaries in the EV performance scene.
