On the anniversary of World EV Day, Nissan announced the launch of Ariya NISMO, its flagship high-performance electric vehicle (EV) set to hit European roads. This marks the return of NISMO to Europe with the Ariya as its poster child. It’s sleek, dynamic, and 100% electric, promising a no-compromise EV experience. But let’s put the brakes on the hype train and delve deeper into what this EV behemoth brings to the table.
The Power and the Glory: Ariya NISMO in Numbers
The Ariya NISMO isn’t just about making a splash in the EV market—it’s about making waves. The vehicle houses an 87kWh battery and a NISMO-tuned powertrain that ramps up power to an impressive 435 PS. For context, that’s an almost 130 PS jump from its non-NISMO cousin. The Ariya NISMO propels from 0-62mph in just five seconds, with a torque of 600 Nm.
These figures seem to be complemented by a suite of features aimed at enhancing the vehicle’s performance. With a unique 20-inch ‘NISMO’-embossed ENKEI wheels fitted with specialized Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres and aerodynamic body modifications, Nissan seems to be marrying form and function in the pursuit of electric performance. Still, claims of achieving greater turning and lateral forces than the GT-R NISMO and a 40% reduction in lift coefficient will need to be put to the real-world test.
Inside the Machine: Comfort Meets Sporty Design
Ariya NISMO’s interiors seem to marry comfort with sporting aesthetics. Seats are trimmed in a suede-like material with NISMO logos, and the brand’s traditional red accents find their place in the stitching and gauge designs. The essence of NISMO certainly seems to permeate the vehicle’s aesthetics.
A Waiting Game
The Ariya NISMO is set to hit the European market in January 2025, with priority access for UK customers being offered in the coming month. While Nissan has been tight-lipped about further updates, it’s clear that the Ariya NISMO is attempting to bring high-performance thrills to the EV market. However, as with any bold claims, the proof will be in the pudding (or in this case, the performance).
Charging Ahead or Short Circuit?
Nissan’s Ariya NISMO promises a high-performance, accessible EV experience, backed by impressive specifications. However, whether it can truly deliver the ‘NISMO thrills’ in an everyday, practical package is yet to be seen. The automotive world will be watching as the Ariya NISMO takes its first steps in its electrifying journey. It certainly looks the part so we’re half-way there!
