In their recent press release, , a prominent manufacturer of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and power batteries, has announced the arrival of two fresh trim additions to their award-winning BYD Dolphin. The Active and Boost trims are the most affordable offerings from BYD’s electric hatchback line, and are poised to make high-tech electric mobility accessible to more consumers. But what do these affordable trims really have in store?

Riding the Waves with BYD Dolphin’s Specs

Known for its playful ‘Ocean Aesthetics’ design, the BYD Dolphin brings eco-friendly motoring to the fore, with a 44.9 kWh LFP Blade Battery onboard. The latest additions, Active and Boost, get unique pricing at £26,195 and £27,165 OTR respectively. The Active version boasts a 70 kW motor and a 211-mile driving range while the Boost variant, powered by a 130 kW motor, promises a slightly lower range of 193 miles. The rapid charge feature sounds promising, with a 100 kW DC charger capable of replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes.

The Dolphin range also utilises BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0, which promises to enhance vehicle performance and efficiency. The range prioritises efficiency with features like a high-efficiency heat pump and an industry-first direct cooling and heating system for batteries.

But what’s the catch here? For a start, while these stats paint a pretty picture on paper, real-world performance could be significantly different. Moreover, the availability of charging facilities and the long-term reliability of these new trims remain to be seen.

The Dolphin’s Dive into the EV Ocean

The BYD Dolphin hatchbacks are designed to be as versatile and agile as the marine mammal they’re named after. Their exterior dimensions and extended wheelbase are set to provide a spacious feel on the inside, the vegan leather sports seats, and the 2,700 mm wheelbase optimised for space and comfort seem to suggest so.

What makes the BYD Dolphin stand out among the sea of EVs, however, is its commitment to safety and its ambitiously loaded standard features. Features like Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control, usually found on pricier EVs, are presented as standard across all Dolphin models.

However, it remains to be seen whether these features will deliver as promised in real-world conditions and whether they can truly justify the price tag of the Active and Boost trims.

Surfacing from the Depths: The Dolphin’s Final Leap

As BYD dives into the crowded EV market with their Dolphin lineup, their commitment to making high-tech electric mobility accessible to all is commendable. The new Active and Boost trims have the potential to sway buyers towards EVs based on their affordability and feature-packed offerings.

However, it is critical to remember that real-world performance and long-term reliability often differ from manufacturer claims. The capabilities of the Dolphin battery, the effectiveness of the promised safety features, and the impact of the innovative cooling system will be the real tests of these new trims.

For those eagerly looking forward to dipping their toes into the electric vehicle pool, BYD’s new trims may seem an attractive proposition. But like any investment, it’s crucial to look beyond the surface of this electric ocean before taking the plunge.
