In a landmark move for UK electric vehicle adoption, Chinese automaker has partnered with to launch the country’s first commercial vehicle-to-grid (V2G) package. The innovative “Power Pack Bundle” combines a leased BYD Dolphin EV with a charger and energy tariff that effectively offers free home charging for qualifying customers.

The deal, announced at Octopus Energy’s Energy Tech Summit, represents the first time V2G technology has been made commercially available to UK drivers at scale. The system allows EVs to not only draw power from the grid but also feed electricity back during peak demand periods.

How the ‘Free Charging’ Deal Works

The bundle includes three key components: a leased V2G-ready BYD Dolphin hatchback, a Zaptec Pro bi-directional charger, and enrollment in Octopus Energy’s smart tariff. Using Octopus’s Kraken technology platform, the system automatically optimises charging and discharging times to maximize savings.

To qualify for free charging, participants must plug in their vehicle at least 20 times per month for minimum 12-hour sessions. The system guarantees free electricity for all miles included in the lease agreement, assuming an efficiency of 3 miles per kWh. Octopus estimates typical drivers could save £620 annually compared to standard variable tariffs, and nearly £1,000 versus fueling a petrol car.

Technical Breakthrough Enables Mass Adoption

BYD’s Dolphin was selected for the program due to its market-leading V2G capabilities. The compact EV’s advanced battery system can seamlessly transition between charging and discharging modes without compromising battery health.

The Zaptec Pro charger features 7.4 kW bidirectional capability, allowing it to both charge the vehicle and feed up to 5.5 kW back to the grid when demand peaks. This helps balance the electricity network while generating credits that offset the driver’s energy costs.

Expanding Access Through Partnership

Recognizing the potential benefits for disabled drivers, the partners have included Motability Operations in the initiative. The collaboration aims to make low-cost electric mobility more accessible while demonstrating V2G’s potential to support vulnerable energy consumers.

Octopus Energy founder Greg Jackson described the technology as a “game-changer” that transforms EVs into mobile energy assets. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li emphasized the project’s role in advancing sustainable technologies and creating a more resilient renewable energy system.

Commercial Availability and Future Potential

The Power Pack Bundle will become available later this year, with interested customers able to join a reservation list through Octopus EV. As more V2G-capable vehicles enter the UK market, the partners anticipate hundreds of thousands of EVs could eventually participate in similar energy-sharing schemes.

The initiative represents a significant step toward integrating electric vehicles into the national energy infrastructure while making EV ownership more affordable. For tech-savvy drivers willing to participate in energy flexibility programs, it offers a compelling new way to offset the costs of going electric.

Early adopters can register interest now for what could become the new standard in affordable EV ownership.

Note: Savings estimates based on 7,600 annual miles. Actual results may vary based on driving patterns and energy use.
