Of all the car manufacturers that could potentially announce their newfound involvement in Formula E, BMW is one of the least surprising.
The i3 and i8 road cars have done wonders in pushing the affordable-yet-luxury EV and hybrid cars to the masses, and it seems there’s a new hybrid variant of an existing model in its fleet revealed almost daily. Oh, and there’s the small fact that the safety cars for the race series are made by the Munich company, too…
Still, it’s fantastic to hear today’s rumours circulating over at motorsport.com, that the German car giant is possibly a lot closer to getting its own FE team than we first thought…
“We are working closely on the engineering side with one of the teams [in Formula E],” BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt told the website. (That team is almost certain to be Andretti.)
“So, we have a good insight, but we have always made it clear there are a few things that have to really strengthen and develop. I think it is going in the right direction,” Marquardt continues. “There is huge potential on the marketing side, but there is also a lot of work that needs to be done to lift that potential, to bring the series forward and make it more attractive for people to be involved.”
Having such a huge car firm on FE’s side would clearly do even more wonders to the two-year-old motorsport. But we’ll have to watch this space to see if it actually happens…
