Audi has unveiled the E5 Sportback at Shanghai motor show, a fully electric fastback designed exclusively for the Chinese market. This model marks the debut of Audi’s new sub-brand, AUDI, which forgoes the traditional four-ring logo in favour of a fresh identity tailored to China’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
Design and Identity
The E5 Sportback introduces a new design language for Audi. It features sleek lines, a minimalist aesthetic, and a distinctive front fascia that departs from the brand’s conventional styling cues. The absence of the iconic four-ring emblem underscores AUDI’s intent to establish a unique presence in the Chinese market.
Performance and Powertrain
Built on the Advanced Digitized Platform co-developed with SAIC, the E5 Sportback offers impressive performance figures. The top-tier variant boasts a dual-motor setup delivering up to 776bhp, enabling a 0-62mph sprint in just 3.4 seconds. A 100kWh battery pack provides a range of up to 478 miles, based on China’s CLTC cycle. The 800-volt architecture supports rapid charging, adding approximately 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the E5 Sportback emphasizes digital innovation. A pillar-to-pillar 4K display spans the dashboard, integrating infotainment and driver information systems. The vehicle also features an AI-powered voice assistant developed in collaboration with ByteDance, offering a personalised user experience.
Market Positioning
The E5 Sportback is tailored to meet the preferences of China’s younger, tech-savvy consumers. By focusing on advanced technology, performance, and a distinct design identity, AUDI aims to carve out a niche in the competitive Chinese EV market.
The introduction of the E5 Sportback signifies Audi’s strategic commitment to the Chinese market. By launching a dedicated sub-brand and delivering a vehicle that aligns with local consumer expectations, Audi positions itself to compete effectively in China’s dynamic automotive sector.
