F1 tester makes leap to FE

GP2 race winner and Formula 1 development driver for Williams, Alex Lynn, has signed with DS Virgin Racing in a “multi-year deal” as its reserve and development driver.

Lynn brings considerable single-seater experience alongside him, with Formula Renault UK and GP3 titles to his name, as well as five GP2 wins in his two seasons in the championship. After a Formula E drive for Jaguar at Donington Park in pre-season testing, alongside talks with Renault e.dams, Lynn’s interest in the series has finally solidified with his appointment to the DS Virgin Racing team.

“Most competitive championship”

Speaking of his new role, Lynn said: “I like the combination of street racing along with the challenge of energy management. I think this series is going to suit me down to the ground. I look forward to working with Sam and Jose in testing and development of the cars and at the DS Performance sim in Satory.”

Discussing the all electric series, Lynn added: “Formula E is arguably the most competitive motor racing championship in the world, with the highest calibre of drivers. As a driver I want to be competing in the top series, which is why I’ve been trying so hard to get into Formula E, and DS Virgin was my first choice. So I’m delighted to have signed a multi-year deal.”

DS Virgin Team Principal, Alex Tai, said of the new appointment: “I’m delighted to have acquired a driver of the calibre and potential of Alex Lynn. It’s a testament to the strength of Formula E that we’re now attracting drivers like Alex and it speaks volumes that Alex has chosen DS Virgin Racing as his team. We’re excited to see what he’s capable of in our car.”

FE returns

It is probable that Lynn will see his track debut this year, with the DS Virgin pair of Lopez and Bird likely to honour WEC commitments to Toyota and Ferrari respectively, that see a clash with the Mexico and New York rounds of the Formula E championship.

Formula E will return on February 18th, as the series heads to Buenos Aires for the third round of the championship.
